Day 30
Consecration to Joseph
On this, the last of our 30 days of reflection on Joseph, let us ponder consecrating ourselves to Joseph. Indeed, if we are to enter into the family covenant with Joseph, it only makes sense.
But what is consecration? Buildings and altar's are consecrated for a holy purpose, but can we consecrate ourselves to a person, and beyond that, a person that is not God? Well, we can and should consecrate our lives to a holy purpose. Indeed, holiness should be our life's purpose, so as to reach Heaven.
So, what would happen if we consecrate ourselves to Joseph? Well, Joseph lives the Family Covenant with Jesus. So, everything that is Joseph's is really Jesus'. And if you are concerned about consecrating yourself to multiple people, namely Jesus and/or Mary in addition to Joseph, do not worry. Entering into a family covenant takes a consecration, which each member of the Holy Family would have done. It is no more than the acceptance of entering into a family covenant. Some are done explicitly and some implicitly. Explicit consecrations are better for us, since then we truly know what we are attempting to do. We will fail in living it out perfectly, but if we get back up every time, we live like Jesus carrying the Cross.
So, how do we do this? It can be a prayer, either spontaneous from the heart or written. Below is a compiled list of some existing consecration prayers to Joseph, many of them written by saints. In that, we can see that saints had no problem consecrating themselves to Joseph to provide us reassurance, if we still need it.
Joseph, may we give ourselves to you in consecration as a means to get closer to Jesus, sharing in your Family Consecration to Him as His brothers and sisters. Amen.
