The Humility of The Father
In the Holy Family, we see a mirror of the Holy Trinity. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is mirrored in Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Jesus being the Son of God and Son of Man, as the integral tie between the two. Mary as the Mother of Jesus mirroring the Holy Spirit as she is referred to as the Spouse of the Holy Spirit. And then there is Joseph that mirrors God the Father. God the Father, the first person of the Trinity, being represented by the lowest of persons in the Holy Family. Oh, the humility of the Father to have Himself represented so.
Joseph is still the third greatest human. And yet, imagine having to care for the Father's two greatest treasures. That is mighty humbling, being in charge of them and having to care for them. That is a lot of responsibility, leaving not much time to think about yourself. And so it is with humility. "Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it's thinking of yourself less." In this, we see Joseph, and to a greater degree Our Heavenly Father. Indeed, we see a model for all, especially fathers.
Fatherhood is not about the father. It is about the love of the father that brings forth children. Without it, there is no fatherhood. The Eternal Father begets His Son with a love so profound that It is a person, the Holy Spirit. Fathers on earth love their wives so intimately that a child is conceived. And with Joseph, this intimacy was spiritual and not physical. Yet, a love so profound that it mirrored the Trinity's love so well that the Trinity dwelled within it in the person of Jesus. And where one of the family is, there are the others as well.
Joseph, help us to see and mirror the humility of God, not only as the infant Jesus, but in calling us to be mirrors of God's love, especially fathers mirroring God the Father, for you did both so well yourself. Amen.
