Day 18
Joseph, the Silent Man
Surely Joseph knew how to talk, but none of his words were recorded in the Bible. This alone speaks volumes. In the Bible, we see Joseph receiving messages from God and immediately taking action. He was a man of action. A man that the Father could trust to do as He asks. A man so obedient to the Father that he could be entrusted with the Father's Only Son.
Too often, we know what God wants of us, but we talk ourselves out of aligning our wills with God's. We do so much that we convince ourselves we are actually doing the Will of God. We convince ourselves that we are doing what is good. Adam and Eve did the same thing. 'God said no, but He didn't really mean it.' We spend this time convincing ourselves that God does not really love us. We only need to look to the Cross to know how terribly wrong we are.
Joseph never did this. His reaction to learning of God's Will was to align his will with God's. He knew that God loved him and trusted that God knew what was best. A pretty smart man that makes the rest of us look pretty stupid. Since "God is love" [1 John 4:8] and God is all-knowing, Joseph has it right here.
Sometimes, we do have a hard time know what God's Will is. Joseph has been there too, anguishing over what God's Will was for him when he first realized Mary was pregnant. His anguish was in not knowing God's Will in order to carry it out, which he did when the angel informed him.
Joseph, help us to never question God's Will in our lives and help us to know God's Will, pondering it in silence. Amen.
